NEWARK, Del. — The Barton women’s lacrosse team could not keep up with the offense of Wilmington (Delaware) University and lost 17-5 in the Wildcat’s season-opener on Wednesday morning.

Junior attacker Angelina Scarpa and freshman attacker Samantha Diaz scored two goals each for the Lady Bulldogs (2-2), while the offense overall struggled to put up points.

Wilmington began the game on six-consecutive goals before Scarpa answered with another. Scarpa managed one more later that half, while the Wildcats finished with 11 at halftime. In the second half, the home team continued to pile on six more goals to finish off Barton for its second-straight loss.

In a full game in goal, Barton’s Katherine Mattena compiled 12 saves, but gave up all 17 goals. Wilmington goalkeeper Tori Grubowski saved 10 would-be goals out of Barton out of 15 shots taken.

The Lady Bulldogs will host Catawba College on Saturday at noon.
