Lady Bulldogs clip Chowan, streak reaches 10

Despite venturing outside the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas, the host Barton College women’s volleyball team continued its winning ways Wednesday night.

The Lady Bulldogs extended their winning streak to 10 matches by sweeping Chowan University 25-18, 26-24, 25-20.

The outcome boosted Barton to 13-6, while the Lady Hawks departed 8-10.

Junior Allie Cullens and senior Miranda Miller combined to register 21 of Barton’s 48 kills. Miller wound up with a match-high 11 kills, while Cullens, with a .769 hitting percentage, added 10.

Junior Angelica Acevedo notched her 14th double-double wih 38 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Kaytlin Elkins chipped in with nine kills and two service aces, while senior Courtney Wiseman and junior Haley Headley each had seven kills.

The opening set produced five ties througth the first 16 points. Up 15-14, Barton took command with a three-point run. An ace from freshman Ashley Owen expanded the cushion to 22-16 — the largest (six points) of the set. A pair of kills from Elkins closed the set.

Barton jumped to a 5-1 edge in the second set when Wiseman took a set from Acevedo for the kill. The Lady Hawks twice rallied, coming as close as 14-13. But Barton stayed aggressive, jumping ahead again by three points on back-to-back aces from junior Maddison Thomson.

But Chowan stole the momentum and changed the gym’s atmosphere, forging a 21-19 edge. Barton took a time-out and came back with the next two points for a 21-21 tie. Chowan was a point away from taking the set but consecutive errors enabled Barton to even the score at 24-24. Barton then added the necessary two points to claim the set.

The Lady Bulldogs took another time-out in the third set when Chowan built an 18-15 lead. Trailing 20-18, Miller and the Lady Bulldogs responded with a match-ending run of seven straight points.

Barton will be back in conference action in Wilson Gym at 2 p.m. Saturdaay against Belmont Abbey College.

ELKINS HONORED

For the second time in the last three weeks, Elkins has been proclaimed the Conferennce Carolinas Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week.

Elkins averaged 4.29 kills sper set in wins against King University and Lees-McRae College. The freshman from Hope Millls raised her conference-leading kills-per-set average to 4.06, which ranks 24th nationally in Div. II.

She delivered 16 kills in a four-set win against King and added 14 kills in a straight-set triumph against Lees-McRae. Elkins recorded double-figure kills in 11 consecutive matches before being limited to nine Wednesday.

With junior setter Acevedo last week’s player of the week, a Barton player has now received the award each of the past three weeks, a run that coiucides with the teams’ 10-match victory streak.
