BANNER ELK — Despite a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute, the Barton College women’s soccer team was unable to hang on for the win in its NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas opener Saturday at Lees-McRae College.
Instead, the Bobcats rallied for a pair of late goals in regulation and the teams battled through to 10-minute overtime periods before settling on a 2-2 tie.
The Lady Bulldogs departed 1-2-1 while Lees-McRae emerged still searching for its first win after two losses and the tie.
Junior Jordyn Brown gave Barton a 1-0 lead with her team-high fourth goal of the season in the 35th minute. Barton’s lead doubled in the 52nd minute when sophomore Rebekah Beal found the net off a double assist from Taylor Doeble and Laisy Scardazzi.
The Bobcats scored in the 72nd minute and again with nine minutes left in regulation to tie the score.
In overtime, Barton, which outshot LMC 27-18, took all four shots in the first period and five of the seven in the second. Bobcats goalkeeper Alexis Feely made four of her 11 saves in OT while Lady Bulldogs keeper Haley Sauls stopped five shots, three coming in the first half.
Barton will host league foe Converse College on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Bulldogs lose at Lees-McRae 4-1
BANNER ELK — The Barton men’s soccer team fell behind by three goals en route to a 4-1 loss in their Conference Carolinas opener Saturday at Lees-McRae.
The Bobcats (3-0-1, 1-0-0 CC), who scored on their first shot of the game, led 3-0 in the first 16 minutes. The Bulldogs (1-2-0, 0-1-0) got a goal back in the 51st minute when junior Tolly Beatson drained a free kick but LMC scored again in the 67th minute.
The Bobcats outshot Barton 15-6 and owned an 11-8 advantage in corner kicks. Bulldogs goalkeeper Jens Madsen Hordvik recorded four saves.
Barton hits the road for a nonconference match Wednesday against University of District of Columbia in Boyds, Maryland.
Lady Bulldogs split final day at USC Aiken Invite
AIKEN, S.C. — Barton picked up its first win at the USC Aiken Invitational on Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Fayetteville State before losing in straight sets to Augusta.
The Lady Bulldogs, who departed with a 3-6 mark after going 1-3 in the tournament, handed the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Broncos (1-4) a 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 defeat as freshman Katylin Elkins posted a match-high 14 kills. Senior Courtney Wiseman led Barton in hitting with a .550 percentage as she collected 13 kilss while junior Haley Headley registered a career-high eight kills. Senior setter Angelica Acevado had 30 assists while junior Riley Bane totaled 10 digs.
In the loss to Augusta, Elkins led Barton with 10 kills while Wiseman and Miranda Miller each registered seven. Miller had 12 digs, matching her career-high. Bane led the team in digs with 26 and Acevedo rang up 25 assists and 19 digs.
After playing all of their first nine matches on the road, the Lady Bulldogs will host nonconference visitor Francis Marion in their Wilson Gym season debut Tuesday at 7 p.m.
