SALISBURY — The Barton College women’s soccer team posted its third shutout of the season with a 2-0 defeat of Mars Hill in the second day of action at the Catawba Classic on Sunday.
The Lady Bulldogs (3-1) got goals from Brenna Keegan and Laisy Scardazzi, one in each half, and goalkeeper Kristin Davis made three saves in earning the shutout.
Keegan took a cross from teammate Rebekah Beal and tapped the ball past Mars Hills starting keeper Claire Witt for the Lady Bulldogs’ first goal, coming in the 31st minute.
Scardazzi rammed in a free kick from the top of the box in the 87th minute to finish the scoring.
Mars Hill (1-4) outshot Barton 6-3 in the second half but both teams finished with eight shots.
Barton is scheduled to kick off NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas play Tuesday at Converse in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Freshmen lead Barton teams again
FAYETTEVILLE — The Barton College cross-country teams were again led by freshmen as Hailey Russell was third overall in the women’s race and Deshawn Owens took fifth overall in the men’s race at Methodist University’s Monarch Cross Country Classic on Saturday morning.
Russell ran the 6-kilometer course in 28 minutes, 38.58 seconds while fellow freshman Morgan Lane, a Community Christian School graduate, was 15th in 31:39.25 and junior Meghan Araldi was 22nd in 32:36.39 for Barton.
Meet winner Methodist was led by Lindsey Pritchard, who had an overall winning time of 26:53.06.
Owens, a C.B. Aycock High product, led the Bulldogs for the second week in a row, completing the men’s 8K course in 32:42.98. Redshirt freshman Nicholas Leeks was next for Barton, coming sixth in 32:52.20 while sophomore Greg Gibbs was 16th in 36:15.01. St. Augustine’s Baron Freeman won the men’s race with a time of 30:27.25 while host Methodist was the men’s team winner.
Barton teams are back in action Friday, Sept. 28, at the Queen City Invitational at McAlpine Park in Charlotte.
Barton loses 2 at USC Aiken Invite
AIKEN, S.C. — After ending a five-match losing streak with a pair of victories Friday at the USC Aiken Invitational, Barton was dealt a couple of 3-0 losses in Saturday’s final day of action at the tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs (3-11) fell to Lander in their first match before being swept by the host Pacers in the second.
Sophomore Kaytlin Elkins led Barton at the net in the first game, posting 10 kills to go with nine digs. Senior setter Angelica Acevedo came up with 12 assists and 13 digs while freshman Sarah Kirk had 10 assists and 16 digs.
Against USC Aiken, freshman Payton Kendall and senior Haley Headley each recorded seven kills for the Lady Bulldogs while Acevedo had 18 assist and 15 digs. Elkins had a match-high 11 kills along with eight digs.
Barton, which has played 14 matches in three states, goes to Bristol, Tennessee, to take on King in the Conference Carolinas opener on Friday. The Lady Bulldogs will finally play their first home match Wednesday, Sept. 19, against Chowan.
