Knights clipped by Ridgecroft 5-4

The Greenfield School boys tennis team forged a split of singles Friday afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to get a win as visiting Ridgecroft claimed two of the doubles matches to squeeze by with a 5-4 win at Barton Tennis Complex.

Greenfield, which lost its second match in as many days to open the season, got a three-set win from McGuire Metts at No. 1 singles. Jonah Losevski and Frankie Peele followed with wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, but a tightly contested doubles match at No. 3 left the Knights one match short after Losevski-Cullen Wells couldn’t solve Ridgecroft’s Hunter Hairston-Trent Barnett in an 8-6 decision.

“We played well in singles,” Greenfield coach Robert Cunningham said. “I knew it was going to be an uphill climb after dropping number three doubles 8-6. We needed (four of six singles matches) and we couldn’t quite get it done.”

At No. 1 doubles, McGuire and Cabell Metts defeated Drew Davis-Robbie Outland of Ridgecroft 8-2.

Greenfield begins CPIC play at Winterville Christ Covenant on Thursday.
