MOREHEAD CITY — The Morehead City Marlins steamrolled the hopes of the Macon Bacon unseating them as Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup champions with six straight runs over the fourth and fifth innings of Sunday’s championship-series game 3.

The Marlins bounced to a 6-2 victory, their 41st of the season after a record-setting regular-season 37-14 mark. Morehead City was the summer collegiate league’s first repeat champion since the Peninsula Pilots brought home their second straight crown in 2014. The Marlins, the East Division champion, downed the Wilson Tobs 4-1 in the semifinals or NorthEast Regional final. The Bacon, who finished second both halves to the Savannah Bananas in the South Division, finished 33-23 in making their first Petitt Cup finals appearance.

The Marlins blanked the Bacon 3-0 in the first game Friday at Luther Williams Field in Macon, Georgia. However, the Bacon fought back with an 11-4 victory Saturday at Big Rock Stadium, setting up Sunday’s finale.

Jared Miller homered in his first at-bat to give the Bacon a quick 1-0 lead. That stood until the bottom of the fourth when the Marlins strung together two walks, a double and two singles for four runs. Two more runs came in the fifth on Hunter Shepherd’s RBI single and a Macon throwing error.
