CARY — With their performances in the 3-A East Regional in the Triangle Acquatic Center on Saturday, the Hunt High duo of junior Ethan Maddrey and sophomore Sanjeev Francis each qualified for four events in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A Swim Championships.
Maddrey and Francis were joined by Dante Gaetano, Zac Taylor and Nick Tew in leading the Warriors, Big East Conference champions for the third consecutive year, to a fifth-place team finish.
D.H. Conley prevailed with 355 points. Hunt amassed 155. Also from the Big East, Fike wound up 15th and Southern Nash 22nd.
Maddrey’s best showing was a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.91 seconds. His other individual state spot will be in the 200 freestyle, where he finished eighth (1:49.93).
Francis claimed a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (57.54) and took seventh in the 100 butterfly (58.10).
Gaetano emerged with a sixth-place showing in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.78).
In the relays, Hunt’s 200 medley quartet of Francis, Gaetano, Maddrey and Taylor grabbed fifth place in 1:47.35. In the 200 freestyle relay, the Warriors came in sixth in 1:36.16. Francis, Maddrey, Tew and Taylor composed the relay.
Fike boasted a state boys qualifier in junior Ryo
Nakaya, who salvaged eighth in the 50 freestyle (23.91).
No girls swimmer from The Wilson Times readership area registered a top-eight finish to qualify for the state meet.
Fike’s Benjamin Woodard placed 11th in the 200 individual medley and 17th in the 500 freestyle. Hunt senior Emily Day wound up 11th in the girls 50 freestyle and 12th in the 100 freestyle. In the 50 freestyle, Fike’s Kaiya Patton was 18th and Catharine Hill 22nd. Patton was also 13th in the 100 bsckstroke. Hunt’s Taylor finished 10th in the boys 50 freestyle. Fike’s Nakaya wound up 11th in the 100 butterfly.
Also, Hunt’s Brinley Warren was 14th in the girls 500 freestyle, while in the boys 500, Ben Tong of Hunt was 11th, Ethan Martinez 15th and Shane Matrejek 16th. In the 100, Hunt’s Tew was 19th, Hunt’s Taylor 20th and Southern Nash’s Alex Terry 21st. Max Fogleman of Fike placed 14th in the 100 breaststroke.
In the girls 400 freestyle relay, Hunt salvaged ninth, Southern Nash 10th and Fike 15th. For the boys, Hunt claimed ninth and Southern Nash 10th.
