Hunt outlasts Fike in five sets

The Hunt High varsity volleyball team was extended five sets before continuing its mastery against archrival Fike in the regular-season finale for both teams Thursday evening in the Fike High gym.
The Lady Warriors, in claiming second place in the 3-A Big East Conference, pulled out a 25-19, 23-25, 17-25, 25-18, 16-14 victory to finish 8-2 in the conference and 14-8 overall.
 The Lady Golden Demons wound up 5-5 in the conference and 8-12 overall. Fike plays its fourth match this week, hosting Northern Nash in the opening round of the conference tournament at 4 p.m. Friday.
In winning the last two sets to sweep the regular-season series, Hunt was powered by senior Amoret Stinagle with 16 kills, senior Sarah Bulluck with 13, sophomore Megan Martinez with 10 and senior Madison Parker with 10.
Sophomore Brianna Moore responded with 49 assists. Allyson Matthews served for five aces among her 14 points and provided excellent deense. Kimberly Evans boosted the offense with 11 service points.
Fike suffered Senior Day heartbreak despite 16 kills, 11 blocks and eight digs from 6-foot-2 senior Mason Blake. Senior Katherine Newton and junior JahAsia Pernell added five kills each. Senior Bailee Summerlin worked for 13 digs.
Sophomore Reece Nelson emergd Fike’s assists leader with 32. Fike registered a season-best 23 blocks.
“Very hard-fought game,” assessed Fike head coach Jaleesa Harper. “We rode the backs of our seniors and fought really hard. Despite the result, I’m very proud of the effort.”
Hunt draws a firt-round tournament bye and will be home for a semifinals test at 7 p.m. Monday.
