Abby Horner, a Hunt High School senior, was awarded the 2017 MC Spirit Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.

This award was set up to keep the late Mary Claire Satterly’s spirit alive and to honor her work ethic and her zest for life. This is the eighth year that this scholarship has been presented.

“Abby’s caring attitude, hard work and positive nature certainly captured Mary Claire’s own nature and spirit,” said Joan Satterly, Mary Claire’s mother.

Horner balanced her community service, church, sports and a full IB program very well. She was active in many groups at Hunt including Headbands of Hope, Helping Hands of Hunt and the Junior Pink Ladies.

She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall and majoring in media and journalism.

Mary Claire Satterly died of leukemia in 2008, but the Mary Claire Satterly Foundation continues to provide ongoing support for projects related to the Mary Claire Satterly Pediatric Playroom in the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill. This year, toy medical kits were purchased for the young patients as a way for them to better understand and cope with their disease.
