Senior Jackson Stone kicked off his final Greenfield School varsity boys soccer campaign in style, and the Knights had no trouble presenting Eric Nguyen with his first victory at the helm of the program Thursday night with an 8-0 win over Fayetteville Freedom Christian in the Dr. Robert T. Stone Memorial Showcase on Forbes Field.

Greenfield, a 1-A member of the split 1-A/2-A Coastal Plain Independents Conference, also registered two goals for William Smith. Sebastian Partida, a sophomore, tallied an assist and scored twice.

Senior Patrick Smith and eighth grader Matt Kirby had one goal each.

Smith collaborated with Stone on Greenfield’s opening two goals, sliding through balls to Stone each time. His first shot was a rifle to the far post before slamming a left-footed finish into the top of the netting.

“Great overall team performance tonight,” Nguyen said. Every player made an impact into the game.”

The Knights took a 3-0 cushion on Smith’s finish off a set piece, and made it 4-0 on Partida’s tally. Off a counter, sophomore Cabell Metts played a ball to Stone, who took two touches and fed to Partida for the finish. Sophomore Will Powell and junior Zeke Ferrell added assists.

Freedom Christian, playing out of the 2-A Sandhills Conference, was also playing in its season opener.

Greenfield continues play in the showcase Friday against Cary Christian.
