MATTHEWS — The bid for a repeat North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A championship for the Greenfield School varsity boys basketball team was upended in the semifinal round Friday night with a 90-82 loss to The Burlington School on the campus of Covenant Day School.
Greenfield, the No. 2 seed, ended its season with a 29-7 record. Burlington, the No.3 seed, improved to 25-10 and faces No. 4 Fayetteville Northwood Temple in Saturday’s championship at Charlotte Country Day.
The matchup of double-digit loss teams for the title was assured after Northwood (22-14), which fell to Greenfield in last year’s title game, edged top seed Fayetteville Trinity Christian 68-65.
Greenfield, which saw six seniors — Jordan Lynch, Collin Guilford, Trey Pittman, Nick Sessoms, Creighton Lebo and Dji Bailey — play in their final high school game, led 18-15 after the first quarter but trailed in a one-possession affair at 59-56 entering the fourth.
