STANHOPE — Nef Gonzalez scored three goals, including one in the first overtime that proved to be the game-winner in host Southern Nash’s 3-2 varsity girls soccer win against 3-A Big East Conference foe Franklinton on Friday afternoon.
The win ended a three-game skid for the Ladybirds, who improved to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in Big East play. The Red Rams departed 5-6 and 1-4, respectively.
Gonzalez scored a goal early in each half to put Southern Nash in front 2-0. However, Franklinton scored on a penalty kick and then got the equalizer late. Gonzalez’s go-ahead goal came with 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
Ladybirds head coach Robbie Kennedy praised the play of junior Iris Radilla and freshman Kaylyn Younes.
Southern Nash continues Big East play at home Tuesday against Northern Nash.
CBA falls to Conley 12-7
WINTERVILLE — C.B. Aycock was unable to recover after host D.H. Conley scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning of Thursday’s baseball game as the Golden Falcons lost 12-7.
Aycock fell to 8-3 overall and 5-3 in 3-A/4-A Eastern Carolina Conference play.
Sophomore Cullen Tucker led CBA at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs while Brett Forbis was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Hunter Theriac doubled and singled in four at-bats while D.J. Madrigal doubled in a run. Tyler Horton knocked in two runs for the Falcons.
