DUDLEY — Offensive struggles continued for a Charles B. Aycock High varsity baseball team that dropped a 4-1 decision to host county rival Southern Wayne in its 3-A/4-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener Friday.
The Golden Falcons (4-2) were limited to a pair of singles and an unearned run by Southern Wayne pitchers Jack Casbarro, the winner, and Derek Holsinger, who got the last two outs to record the save.
Both CBA hits came in the fourth inning, when it scored its run. Blake Gipson singled and Nick Aycock reached on an infield single. The Saints misplayed Luke Frederick’s sacrifice bunt to load the bases. However, CBA managed only one run when Nolan Harrell’s grounder was errored.
Southern Wayne stretched its winning streak to five games in improving to 2-0 in the conference and to 6-2 overall.
The Saints grabbed a 2-0 lead against CBA starter and loser Cody Whaley, a junior right-hander, in the second. Matthew Stott doubled in a run and later scored on Kolby Anderson’s single.
The 3-A Falcons continue conference play at 4-A D.H. Conley at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
