Leading 1-0, the host Fike High varsity baseball team plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and proceeded to its first 2018 win by a 3-0 margin against 2017 2-A Eastern Plains Conference champion North Johnston on Friday.
Both teams nanaged just four hits, but Fike starting pitcher Trevor Mills, the winner, worked out of jams in the second and fourth innings.Reliever Chad Bean silenced the Panthers without a hit the last three innings in notching the save. Bean got a game-ending double play.
Mills helped his cause by reaching on an error in the third inning and later scoring on center fielder Zach Pittman’s single.
In the two-run sixth, third baseman Jaelynn Melton walked; right fielder Myles Cyrus singled; first baseman Jackson Terry was hit by a pitch; designated hitter Tanner Sullivan drew a bases-loaded wak; and Cyrus scored on a fielder’s choice.
Mills survived a single and double in the top of the second and, in the fourth, escaped a single and two walks. A North Johnston base runner was cut down at second base and Mills ended the inning with a strikeout.
Colby Hall led the Panthers with a 2-for-3 showing at the plate.
The Golden Demons evened their record at 1-1.
