ROANOKE RAPIDS — Senior Jimmy Forte poured in a season-high 28 points as the Wilson Christian varsity boys basketball team got off to a winning start in 2018 with a 48-42 nonconference triumph Monday at Halifax Academy.
Forte added 11 rebounds and five of the Chargers’ 16 total steals as Wilson Christian improved to 8-7.
Eric Williams netted 18 points to pace the Vikings, who dropped to 5-8.
The Chargers will resume play in the North Carolina Christian School Association’s 2-A East Region on Tuesday when they visit Raleigh Christian. Wilson Christian won its only region outing so far.

GIRLS BASKETBALLLady Chargers’ rally falls short at Halifax
ROANOKE RAPIDS — Wilson Christian fought back from a sluggish first half in Monday’s nonconference varsity girls basketball game at Halifax Academy but the Lady Chargers fell short of taking the lead in the final minute and lost 50-46.
Wilson Christian trailed 30-14 at the half but was within three points in the final minute. However, Halifax missed the front end of a one-and-one but got the offensive rebound. The Lady Vikings went back to the line, where they made one shot to go up four points and a 3-point attempt by Wilson Christian’s Ashley Hartfield bounced around the rim and out.
The Lady Chargers dropped to 9-6 while Halifax won for the 12th time in 13 games.
Junior McKenna Griffin scored a season-high 23 points, including a 15-of-18 showing at the free-throw line, to go with 11 rebounds while Christy Jones added 11 points. The Lady Vikings were led by Maddie Suiter with 18 points.
Wilson Christian will continue nonconference play Tuesday at St. Mary’s in Raleigh.

Parker, Farmer lead WCA past Halifax
ROANOKE RAPIDS — Katelyn Parker dropped in 16 points and Kayla Farmer added 10 points to help Wilson Christian to a 41-19 girls basketball victory at Halifax Academy on Monday.
The Lady Chargers, now 8-3, will visit St. Mary’s in Raleigh on Tuesday.
Chargers thump Vikings 53-11
ROANOKE RAPIDS — Wilson Christian cruised to a 53-11 boys basketball victory Monday at Halifax Academy.
Spencer Parker led the Chargers (3-8) with 10 points while Seth Thompson, Gabe Barnes and Calvin Peacock netted eight points each.
Wilson Christian will visit Raleigh Christian on Tuesday.
