The North Carolina Forest Service is planning a prescribed burn east of Wilson on Friday.
According to Wilson County Ranger Brandon Webb of the N.C. Forest Service, the plan is to burn 40 acres on Bakertown Road, weather permitting.
The property, owned by Mike Mercer, is about 2 miles south of N.C. 42 and about 7 miles east of the Wilson city limits.
Webb said the plan is to light the fire around 11 a.m. and burning should be completed around 2 p.m.
The purpose of the burn is reduction of fuels by about 70 percent to reduce the risk of wildfire and also improve habitats for wildlife.
Webb said that spoke from the fire should go from west to east away from Wilson and should not affect Wilson residents.
Wilson foresters will be joined by additional resources from Edgecombe and Nash counties to conduct the burn.
