FLORENCE, S.C. — The Barton College men’s soccer team was dealt its first 2017 defeat by a 2-1 margin against host Francis Marion University on a rainy Wednesday evening.
The Bulldogs departed with a 1-1 mark, while Francis Marion was kicking off its season.
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Bulldogs drew even in the 58th minute on the first collegiate goal from Cooper Dean, a freshman from Hunt High. From six yards out, Dean headed in Tolly Beatson’s corner kick.
Levin Sandmann accounted for both Francis Marion goals.
The clincher came with less than 10 minutes remaining. Off a long run, Sandmann was slid a pass and knocked in an accurate shot from some 10 yards out. Gaspard Mianne and Colin McPartlin collected assists.
Sandmann opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. From some eight yards out, Sandmann headed in Julian Kersting’s corner kick.
The Bulldogs claimed a 7-2 margin corner kicks, while the edge in shots, 19-12, belonged to Francis Marion.
Barton goalkeeper Jens Madsen Hordvik managed six saves.
