BUIES CREEK — Fike High sophomore Jake Herring, the reigning 3-A Big East Conference individual champion in his first year of high school golf, is already hard at work on his encore presentation as a high school athlete.
In the season-opening Keith Hills High School Kickoff on Friday, Herring bested a field of 100 competitors to win medalist honors, firing a 2-under 70 on the 6,717-yard, par-72 Orange and Black Course at Keith Hills Golf Club.
Herring was the only golfer to shoot under par in the event, besting Biggs Hawley of Raleigh Broughton’s “Gold” team by three strokes.
As a team, the Golden Demons finished 17th out of 20 competing teams with a 363, with Broughton’s Gold unit winning the team title with a 306 for its low four individuals, two shots clear of Cary Green Hope. Holly Springs’ Gold team (315), Southern Pines Pinecrest (318) and the “Blue” team from Apex Friendship (324) completed the top five.
Fike also counted a 92 from Warren Matthews, a 99 by Luke Gregory and the 102 of Ryan Richardson.
