For much of the 3-A Big East Conference schedule, the Fike High varsity boys basketball team had been flirting with knocking off a top team.
Thursday night in the semifinals, the Golden Demons finally found their foil. And it was none other than their archrival.
After losing to Hunt three times in the regular season and once in overtime, the Golden Demons now stand one win away from a back-door berth into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs with a 56-42 victory in the Hunt gym.
Fike, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, climbed to 9-14 and will face No. 2 Northern Nash on the Knights’ home floor, either Friday or Saturday. Northern Nash clipped No. 3 seed Rocky Mount 55-53 in the other Big East semifinal.
Should Fike win the conference tournament, it would be assured a playoff berth and seeded with other wild-card qualifiers according to their respective Adjusted MaxPreps rankings.
Hunt, the league’s regular-season champion, dropped to 16-8 and awaits a home game in the first round of the playoffs.
