BURLINGTON — After being shut out in the first set of their doubles opener in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A championships Friday, the Fike High duo of Thomas Hodges-John Gliarmis seemed to be headed to a third set against Cameron Union Pines’ Will Hart-Sean Melia at Burlington Tennis Center.

However, Hodges-Gliarmis, who lost 6-0 in the opening set, couldn’t hold a 5-2 lead in the second as Hart-Melia won five straight points to prevail 7-5.

That spelled a disappointing end to the season for Hodges-Gliarmis, the No. 3 seed from the East Region and the Big East Conference champion. Hart-Melia was eliminated by the same score in the second round by Asheville’s Meade Olson-Henry Kelso.

CARY — The Greene Central tandem of Paul Miller-Nailah Ortega also was limited to a short stay at the NCHSAA championships, falling in the first round of the state 2-A tournament at Cary Tennis Center.

Miller-Ortega was dispatched by North Carolina School of Science and Math’s Vincent Xia-Alex Marin 6-2, 6-1.

The Unicorns duo then fell to Brevard’s Liam Baer-Charles Kang in the quarterfinals.
