Fike announces fall sports tryout times

Fike High athletic director Tom Nelson announces that the start date for fall sports practices for four of the Golden Demons’ sports will be Thursday, Aug. 1, the first permissible practice date under North Carolina High School Athletic Association rules.

Football, volleyball, boys soccer and cross-country will each meet for the first time on Aug. 1, with prospective football candidates to meet with Nelson and his assistant coaches from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. on the Fike practice field.

Volleyball, under the direction of Brent Secrest for the second straight season, will convene from 5 to 7 p.m. inside the gym, while Chris Mizelle’s defending 3-A Big East Conference boys soccer champions will hold its first mandatory session from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. on the soccer field.

Cross-country will gather at 4:30 p.m. at Gillette Athletic Complex for the start of coach Cheryl Gardner’s second season.

Two other sports, girls tennis and girls golf, will have later opening dates. 

Girls tennis, under the direction of veteran coach Lee Matthews, will begin Tuesday, Aug. 6 and run from 3 until 5 p.m. on the Fike courts.

Willow Springs Country Club will be the site of girls golf tryouts on Tuesday, Aug. 13 beginning at 3:30 p.m.

All prospective athlete must provide up-to-date physicals, along with completed and signed emergency contact forms as well as concussion forms before being allowed to participate.
