Davis Wainright has played a major role in his SouthWest Edgecombe High varsity football team’s success this season, making him this week’s Farris & Thomas Student-Athlete of the Week.

Davis, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound senior left guard on offense and linebacker/tackle on defense, has helped the Cougars to an 11-1 mark and the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference championship as they head into the second round of the NCHSAA 2-A playoffs. He earned All-EPC acclaim last season.

The son of Rhonda and David Wainright of the West Edgecombe community, Davis has a 4.37 GPA and is ranked No. 5 in his senior class at SouthWest Edgecombe, where he takes all honors and Advanced Placement courses. He is a member of the school’s chapter of National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Davis also plays golf for the Cougars.

Active in his youth group of West Edgecombe Baptist Church, Davis has volunteered at the animal shelter in Pinetops and as part of the Christmas shopping for EC students at SouthWest.

He works part-time at Don’s Bicycle Shop in Wilson.
