Regional artist Sally Sutton will be featured in Hammond Gallery in the Boykin Center this fall. Her show, “Inspired by Nature,” will be displayed from Oct. 11 to Nov. 10, with an opening reception on Oct. 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., preceded by an artist talk at 5 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
Sutton enjoys the challenge of capturing light and experimenting with rich, bright color combinations while contrasting them with deep shadows, and her use of brush strokes creates movement and energy in her work.
She wants her paintings to reflect what she feels about a place or subject, and instill some sort of emotional response in the viewer. She has always been intrigued with nature and enjoys painting en plein air in the countryside and beyond.
If the weather doesn’t permit, she uses a combination of small sketches, reference photos and color notes to develop larger paintings in her studio.
