Players, coaches, ADs, parents, and readers — I would like to start off by thanking you for allowing me into your community.
I am excited to get to work with all of you in Johnston and Wilson counties. I’ve been trying to learn all I can about every team and school.
I’m from Goldsboro, graduated from Greenfield School’s archrival Wayne Country Day in 2013. I went to ECU, majoring in communication with a concentration in journalism, and graduated in 2017.
Since I was an 8-year-old I wanted to be a sports journalist and I got my start in professional journalism in 2017 when I became a news producer for WITN. But over the last seven months, I worked for the Kinston Free Press where I refined my skills of covering local sports teams.
I am a big Dallas Cowboys fan as my mother has been all her life. I’m a Lakers fan, because my grandmother was a big Shaq fan in the 1990s. I love talking NBA, NFL or NCAA basketball so feel free to come chat.
I have a passion for the other sports as well. My first beat ever was the ECU tennis beat at The East Carolinian. I have an admiration for the passion of athletes who don’t normally play in front of huge crowds, but play for the love of the game.
All those experiences have led me to The Wilson Times and Johnstonian News, where I will get to work with talented people like Paul Durham, Jimmy Lewis and the legendary Tom Ham. I also get the treat of working for one of two family owned papers in North Carolina.
I am big on multimedia coverage, which is why my twitter handle is @MMJKaiJones (MMJ stands for multimedia journalist). Expect to see more video on both www.wilsontimes.com and www.johnstoniannews.com. I have some ideas for web series that I’m excited to bring to the table.
My big hope is to make us even better online than we already are in Wilson. For Johnston County, I’m looking to provide the best coverage I can, in print and online, for North Johnston, Princeton, Smithfield-Selma, Neuse Charter and Corinth Holders high schools
I am excited to showcase the best and brightest and tell the stories the best I can. I am excited and can’t wait to take this ride with you!
