WINTERVILLE — Taking the field after a one-night delay, the Wilson Post 13 American Legion baseball team appeared to have momentum on its side in the seventh inning of Thursday’s season-opening Area I East Division clash with Pitt County Post 39.
Trailing by two runs in the top of the seventh, Nash Central’s Tyler Sherrod, now at Chowan University, slugged a two-run homer to tie matters at 4.
But in the bottom half, an untimely error served as the bane of Post 13 in a 5-4 loss on the campus of Pitt Community College.
Pitt County put runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh before a ground ball was hit to shortstop.
Wilson was able to get the force at second, but the throw to first was mishandled, allowing the Pitt County runner to continue around third base and come home with the winning run.
“You could tell we hadn’t played a lot of competitive games together,” first-year Post 13 head coach Noah Edens said.
In the seventh, North Johnston’s Trey Whitley legged out an infield single before Sherrod’s two-run shot. Wilson had six hits, compared to seven for Pitt County.
Post 39 took a 4-0 lead after three innings before Wilson chipped back with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Fike’s Trevor Mills started for Post 13 and threw four innings before yielding to Beddingfield’s Alston Pittman. Pittman was charged with the loss in relief as SouthWest Edgecombe’s T.J. Harris finished the game on the mound.
Fike’s Justice Lynn, Greenfield’s Cedric Kirby, and Hunt’s Parker Garris also hit safely for Post 13.
Post 13, who continues Area I East play Saturday in a doubleheader at Edenton Post 40 beginning at 2 p.m., left the bases loaded on two occasions.
The twinbill will be played on the Holmes High campus.
