MIDDLE SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Elm City boots Forest Hills in opener

The Elm City girls soccer team kicked off its season Wednesday with a 9-0 triumph at Forest Hills.

Erin Pope, who netted the opening goal in the first minute, triggered the Lady Vikings with three goals. Hannah Mosley contributed two goals and two assists. Avery Lentz chipped in with two goals and a pair of assists.

Mallory Jenkins added a goal and Hayley Selfe wrapped up the scoring in the 55th minute on Caroline Adkins’ second assist.

Elm City, which led 6-0 at halftime, got two saves each from goalkeepers Jenkins and Mesha Strickland. Ashlyn Brunetti, Kathryn Adkins and Akari Nakaya anchored the back line.

The Lady Vikings welcome South Edgecombe on Monday, while, on the same afternoon, Forest Hills visits Toisnot.

Springfield blanks Darden 7-0 in opener

Cappa Bunn and Evelyn Chavez scored two goals each as the Springfield girls soccer team kicked off its season with a 7-0 win at Darden on Wednesday.

Also scoring one goal each for the Lady Wildcats were Susan Guzman, Madelyn Ellis and Natalie Cox. Itzel Charres-Vargas made one save in goal a she recorded the shutout.

Snedeker, Davis pace Wilson runners

Toby Snedeker of Elm City and Katelyn Davis of Forest Hills set the pace for runners from Wilson County schools in the Red Oak Southern Bank cross-country invitational.

With a time of 12 minutes, 40 seconds, Snedeker finished fifth overall in a field of 138 runners.

For the girls, Davis recorded a fifth-place time of 14:40 among 113 runners.

Red Oak dominated both races, with boys amassing 41 points and the girls 42.

Completing the boys top five were Speight with 87 points, Southern Nash (115), Nash Central (117) and Rocky Mount Edwards (118). Twelve schools participated.

Southern Nash’s girls placed second with 87 points, followed by Elm City (103), Rocky Mount (113) and Speight (177).

For the Speight boys, Alex Porto claimed eighth with a time of 12:50. Sixth-place Toisnot (144) was led by Devin Whitehead with an 11th-place time of 13:02.

In the girls race, Emma Grace Spencer of Elm City took 6th in 15:13, while Reagan Fulghum was 10th (15.43).

Winning individuals from Red Oak were Liam Sellers (11:49) for the boys and Elana Griffin (14:01) for the girls.
