One person died Friday afternoon in a collision between a tractor-trailer and a small passenger car on N.C. 42.
Trooper R.T. Edwards of the N.C. Highway Patrol confirmed the fatality as he began his investigation of the crash scene.
The wreck happened around 3 p.m. near 7662 N.C. 42 outside Kenly, which is at the Buckhorn community in western Wilson County.
The 18-wheeler ran completely off the road and north of the westbound lane, coming to rest in a depression that is on the banks of Buckhorn Branch, a finger of the Contentnea Creek.
A white Toyota ended up off the road south of the eastbound lane in front of an old silo and abandoned commercial structure.
The wreck happened where the two-lane road dips as it crosses the creek through a culvert.
First responders worked in the rain to remove the driver’s body.
Edwards said the tractor-trailer’s driver was taken to the hospital.
N.C. 42 was blocked to traffic between N.C. 581 and Sadie Road by the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office.
The Rock Ridge Volunter Fire Department responded to the wreck.
Motorists involved in the apparent head-on collision have not been identified. Edwards said the crash remained under investigation late Friday.
