Doubles sweep sparks Lady Bulldogs

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Boosted by a sweep in doubles, the Barton College women’s tennis team posted a 6-1 victory against Bluefield State College on Wednesday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The nonconference triumph lifted the Lady Bulldogs of the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas to 3-6, while Bluefield State was left winless in 11 outings.

The Lady Bulldogs got 8-0 doubles wins from junior Vanessa Sanoja-freshman Ada Vargas at No. 2 and freshman Claudia Capellades-junior Whitney Hamilton at No. 3. At No. 1, Barton’s Marissa Stevenson, a sophomore-junior Daria Avram prevailed 8-3.

Turning to singles, Avram, at No. 1, blanked the Big Blues’ Milica Kmjaja, 6-0, 6-0; while Vargas, at No. 4, ruled 6-1, 6-1 against Kelsi Browning. At No. 3, Sanoja rebounded to outlast Milica Knezevic 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 and clinch the team outcome.
