NASHVILLE — A suspect in the Sunday killing of an Elm City man has taken his own life, authorities said Monday afternoon.

Michael Steven Stell, 34, was found at a cemetery in Halifax County where he committed suicide, according to Chief Deputy Brandon Medina of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office.

Stell was wanted on a murder charge in the Sunday shooting death of 31-year-old Brandon Scott Keen Jr., whose last-known address was in the Elm City area.

First responders were called to 9000 Grover Road north of Nashville on Sunday and found Keen suffering from a single gunshot wound, Medina said in a Monday news release. Nash County EMS paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Medina said witnesses identified Stell as the suspect and told investigators he drove away in a green Chevrolet Tahoe SUV.

Nash County deputies had distributed Stell’s name and photograph to the news media on Monday, advising residents to report any sightings. Stell was considered armed and dangerous.

The investigation into Keen’s killing and Stell’s suicide is ongoing, according to authorities.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Detective Jonathan Hillis of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office at 252-903-2453.
