GOLDSBORO — A rural Wayne County man faces an attempted murder charge after sheriff's deputies say he stabbed his wife in the chest Saturday.

Deputies were dispatched to an assault call on the 100 block of Austin Drive southeast of Princeton shortly before noon. The victim identified her husband, 26-year-old Brandon Lee Cannon of the home, as the person who stabbed her, Capt. Shawn Harris of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Medics took the woman to Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro, where she was transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for trauma care.

Deputies arrested Cannon on an attempted murder charge and booked him into the Wayne County Detention Center without bond.

The incident occurred in northwestern Wayne County near the Johnston County line. Austin Drive is off Whitley Church Road and roughly halfway between the town of Princeton and the Rosewood community.
