The Wilson County Health Department will present a proposal for a portable dental unit at the regular meeting of the Wilson County Board of Education tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the central office at 113 Tarboro Street NE in Wilson.
Health Department director Teresa Allen will deliver the presentation.
According to her report, only 52% of Medicaid eligible children are receiving dental service and 39% of children in Wilson County are living in poverty. Some 17% of kindergartners have untreated tooth decay.
The way the proposal would work is the county will provide staff, dental equipment, supplies, coordinate scheduling with school staff, and arrange for pickup and drop off.
Wilson County Schools will designate a room for the service, get permission forms from parents and assist with program promotion and provide internet access.
The program would service children from kindergarten through 12th grade who have Medicaid or are uninsured and do not have a dental home. It will also serve pregnant women with Medicaid.
At least 3,500 children could be served by the program.
In other business, the board will:
• Hear a report on 2019-20 food services.
• Discuss additional capital funding from the county.
• Discuss the $1 Million Priority List for 2019-20.
• Discuss Title I eligibility at schools.
• Hold a closed session on personnel recommendations.
