Demons fall to Rams for 3rd straight loss

Hampered by the 3-point line, the Fike High varsity boys basketball dropped its third straight contest Tuesday night following a 63-61 nonconference loss to visiting Cleveland.

Fike (1-3), which won its opener at South Granville, trailed 36-35 at halftime. But the 3-A Big East Conference Golden Demons couldn’t withstand a 3-point barrage from the 3-A Greater Neuse Conference Rams (1-2), who were accurate on nine 3-point attempts, six in the first half.

Junior Jaylen Ward led Fike with 17 points, while junior Elijahwon Cooper had 15 points, five rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Moses Parker was the third Fike player in double figures, netting 14 points.

Josh Marlowe led Cleveland with 19 points.

Fike plays host to Beddingfield on Tuesday, which will double as the Bruins’ season opener.

WRESTLING

STANHOPE — Host Southern Nash emerged 1-1 after its tri-match Tuesday against East Wake and Corinth Holders. The 3-A Big East Conference Firebirds dropped a 47-35 decision against the Pirates of the 4-A Northern Athletic Conference and handed the 3-A Greater Neuse River Conference Warriors a 69-12 defeat.

Winning both of their matches for the Firebirds were Kendrell Woodard and 106 and 113 pounds; Johnathan Salazar at 106 and 113 pounds; Daniel Medina at 120 pounds; Luke Coble at 145 pounds and Jesus Raya at 195 pounds.

Southern Nash returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 28, for a quad-match at Ayden-Grifton.
