PINETOPS — Playing for the first time in September, the host SouthWest Edgecombe varsity football team rolled to a 44-7 nonconference victory against Northern Nash of the 3-A Big East Conference on Friday night.
Leading 6-0, the Cougars of head coach Jonathan Cobb exploded for 30 points in the second quarter en route to their third win against one loss. Northern Nash fell to 3-2.
Senior Darntrell Council and junior Cortez Jones each rushed for a pair of touchdowns, and senior quarterback Jayden Lewis threw a pair of TD passes. The Cougars of the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference piled up 252 rushing yards and Lewis connected on 3-of-7 passes for 79 yards and no interceptions.
Junior Keishon Porter was on the receiving end of both of Lewis’ TD tosses. Porter wound up with two receptions for 44 yards. SouthWest was successful on four two-point conversion tries.
Council paced the Cougars’ running attack with 95 yards on six rushes. Nine different ball carriers recorded positive yardage.
Leadiang SouthWest’s defensive effort were senior Jelan Smith with five tackles and three assists, junior Kedar Darden with five tackles and three assists and junior Michael Hussey with four tackles and three assists. Darden came up with two of the Cougars’ four fumble recoveries.
Northern Nash averted a shutout with a fourth-quarter TD.
The Cougars are scheduled to conclude nonconference play at home next Friday against Currituck.
