WENDELL — Corinth Holders High School will receive a $5.8 million to ease overcrowding on its campus. The Johnston County Board of Education voted unanimously at its April 9 meeting to approve the new construction project.
Construction is planned to begin May 1 and will take up to a year to complete.
Johnston County Public Schools Chief of Staff Delores Gill described Corinth Holders’ situation to the school board.
“According to March 1 data, Corinth Holders High School is 823 students over capacity and is projected to grow,” said Gill. “Currently, students are housed in 23 mobile units. This addition will provide 24 classrooms, 18 general classrooms, four science classrooms and two computer labs.
Hite Associates provided the original school design and preparations have been made for future addition, said Gill.
“Hite Associates completed the design and bids were received on March 13,” said Gill. “The administration operations department recommends awarding the construction bid to Wimco out of Washington (North Carolina) for $5.8 million. Their bid is well under the projected budget for this project. Wimco was the general contractor for the original school.”
“I’m excited to bring this opportunity to Corinth Holders High School for this addition,” said school board Chairman Mike Wooten. “It’s time to clear out the mobile units and put them in a safer environment.”
School board member Teresa Grant made the motion to approve the bid, seconded by Tracie Zukowski.
The school, located in Johnston County near the Wake County town of Wendell, has an enrollment of 1,928 students.
Corinth Holders High School opened in 2009 and Johnston County Public Schools Superintendent Ross Renfrow was its first principal. He served in the role until 2012 when he moved to the central office, where he became deputy superintendent in 2013 and superintendent in November 2015, upon the retirement of former superintendent Ed Croom.
