Community Briefs: Church holding International Gospel Festival

ELM CITY — First Missionary Baptist Church, 6211 E. Langley Road, will host its International Gospel Festival beginning at noon Saturday with gospel singing, preaching, spiritual dance, Spanish traditional dance, horse and pony rides, food, inflatables and cornhole games. The preaching will be in English and Spanish.

First Missionary Baptist Church of Elm City, Bible Missionary Church, Amor De Dios and Joy Temple Church Ministries are sponsoring and organizing the festival.

Genealogical society to meet

The Wilson County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 28 in the Wilson County Public Library assembly room, 249 Nash St. Karen Edmundson will present her new book, “A History of the Davis Family in North Carolina and Texas.”

Episcopal celebration scheduled

An Episcopal celebration for Bishop Ernestine Hopkins McGee is planned for 6 p.m. Friday, May 31 at the Darden Alumni Building, 1600 Lipsomb Road. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 7-12. For more information or for tickets, call Gloria Carter at 252-360-1143.

Father-son empowerment service set

Crossroad Street Ministry will present a fathers’ and sons’ empowerment day from 1-6 p.m. Saturday, June 1 at 600 Nash St. at the corner of Nash and Pender streets with vendors, speakers, entertainment and food. Barton to host youth soccer camp

Barton College will host a youth residential soccer camp for boys ages 7-13 from Friday, June 7 through Sunday, June 9.

Toisnot Park to host festival

Jamar Freeman and Dennis Woods will present a day of fun and games for the family from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 15 at Toisnot Park. Activities will include face-painting, free prizes, bounce houses, free food, free kids’ ID cards, free haircuts and an all-star kickball game.

Garden volunteer day slated

The Wilson Botanical Gardens and the Wilson Master Gardeners are asking for volunteers to help uproot invasive weeds in the banana split sundae garden at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 21.

Trained master gardeners will lead the volunteer workers. Volunteers are asked to bring sturdy shoes, a cap or hat, work gloves, sunscreen, insect repellent and their favorite weeding and pruning tools. They will meet outside the Children’s Secret Garden entrance near the shed and greenhouse.

Bridge club announces results

Wilson Duplicate Club winners for May 21 are Judy and Sim Wooten, first; Betty Banks and Mabel Gray Henry, second; Frank Eagles and Jeff Gates, third; and John Covington and Watson Barnes, fourth.
