ELM CITY — Wynn Chapel Church Ministries is holding a 3-kilometer run to raise money for its youth programs and cancer charity Pennies From Angels.

The inaugural Finish Strong 3K is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, June 2, with check-in at 8 a.m. and lineup at 8:45. Runners and walkers will meet in front of the fenced basketball court at Alice Spivey Park, 108 Armstrong St. in Elm City.

“This race means a lot to people simply because of what it stands for,” race director Joshua Robinson wrote. “Finish Strong is more than a saying but what many cancer patients use as their mantra. I have lost two family members to the disease in the last month and this race has been fuel for my motor to continue my works in the community and beyond.”

Founded by Helen and Cliff Harwood of Black Creek, Pennies From Angels is a nonprofit that provides financial assistance for cancer patients’ personal expenses including utilities, rent, medications, groceries and transportation. The group has disbursed more than $100,000 to cancer patients and their families in the last 15 years.

The race course is mostly flat terrain and crosses the moderately steep Elm City bridge. Runners will climb and descend the bridge and cross the finish line on flat terrain.

Registration is $25 per person in advance and $30 on race day, with pets welcome to run with their owners at no additional cost. Participants can order a Finish Strong T-shirt for an additional $8, with shirts ordered by Monday guaranteed to arrive before the event.

Individuals with disabilities or who are otherwise unable to complete the 3K course are invited to participate in the Finish Strong Miracle Mile, an abbreviated course one block from the finish line. The Miracle Mile begins at 10 a.m. and the cost to register is $15.

Online registration forms are available on the Wynn Chapel website, http://overflowwccm.wixsite.com/mysite.
