MOREHEAD CITY — Right now in the Coastal Plain League’s North Division, it’s the Wilson Tobs — and then everyone else.

The Tobs remained head and shoulders above their three division mates Friday night at Big Rock Stadium, winning their fifth straight CPL contest with a 2-1 victory over the Morehead City Marlins in 10 innings.

Wilson (8-1), which also owns the CPL’s best record, generated just two hits off Morehead City pitching and committed four errors. However, catcher Shamoy Christopher’s RBI single was the difference in the 10th. After designated hitter Christian Avant bounced into a fielders choice to retire one of the two inserted runners in Deshawn Lookout, Christopher dropped a run-scoring single into right field that allowed left fielder Hunter Gore to score.

Wilson was outhit 7-2 and allowed the Morehead City leadoff batter to reach in seven of the first nine innings, while striking out 16 times against Marlins pitching.

C.J. Gonzalez, who pitched the final two innings in relief to get the win for Wilson, left the tying run on third. He opened the inning by coaxing Morehead City’s Daniel Little into a 6-3 double play that moved catcher Ty Babin to third.

However, Babin advanced no further, as Gonzalez got Jordan Schulefand to pop out to end the game.

But Wilson took a 1-0 lead in the first after Chris Meyers’ RBI groundout plated Jared Carr. Morehead City (6-6) leveled matters in the sixth on a Schulefan single. Colby Johnson rounded third and scored on an error by Wilson starter Chandler Coates.

Coates departed with a no-decision despite a four-hit performance through six innings. He struck out two and walked one. Cal Hehnke was tagged with the loss in relief, allowing only one hit — the game-winning single from Christopher — in the 10th.

Wilson returns to Fleming Stadium to face the Edenton Steamers on Saturday.
