PIKEVILLE — The outstanding pitching to start the season continued for the C.B. Aycock varsity baseball team in its windy home opener Friday as the Golden Falcons thumped Northern Nash 12-1 in five innings.
Starting senior right-hander Zack Brewer (1-0) struck out nine while giving up one run on two hits, the only two the 3-A Big East Conference Knights (0-2) got. Both came off the bat of senior Silas Gonzalez.
Senior Luke Frederick took over for Brewer in the fourth and struck out two batters and senior Jordan Gay fanned all three batters he faced in the fifth and final inning. Coupled with senior Cody Whaley’s five-inning one-hitter in Wednesday’s season-opening victory at Hunt, the 3-A Falcons of the 3-A/4-A Eastern Carolina Conference have given up just three hits and one run in 10 innings so far.
Senior Blake Gipson led CBA at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while sophomore Blake Dilda doubled, singled and drove in two runs in three at-bats. Nolan Harrell had a three-run triple for Aycock, which visits Wayne County rival Rosewood on Tuesday.
