PIKEVILLE — Senior right-hander Taylor Waddell pitched the distance and aided her cause with a two-run homer in the fifth inning Tuesday night to lift the Charles B. Aycock High softball team into the fourth round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A playoffs with a 9-3 win against Western Alamance.

CBA, still undefeated against 3-A opposition this season, improved to 22-3 overall as the No. 3 overall seed in the East region. Western Alamance, the No. 9 seed, had its season ended at 21-5.

Up next for CBA in the fourth round is a match-up with Hillsborough Orange, which dispatched Cleveland 5-2 in another third-round game Tuesday. Orange, as the No. 2 seed, will host CBA on Friday night at 6.

After trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Golden Falcons erupted with four hits, assisted by two walks, to take a 5-1 edge.

“When we start hitting and get a lead, usually it carries over to the next batter,” C.B. Aycock head coach LaVon Matthews said.

Western Alamance cut the CBA lead in half with two runs in the third, but CBA responded in the fourth with two runs. Junior Cassandra Lassiter and senior Mookie Powell each singled, with junior Taylor Puetz lacing a run-scoring single. Puetz later scored on a wild pitch.

In the fifth, senior Allison Shingleton walked prior to Waddell’s two-run homer well beyond the right-field fence. Waddell, in the circle, allowed five hits and just one earned run, while striking out six and walking three. CBA held an 11-5 edge in hits.

Powell, Lassiter, Puetz and Waddell each had two hits. Western Alamance center fielder Destiny Beam was 2 for 4, with Brooke Smith taking the pitching loss for the Lady Warriors.
