CBA blanks Saints in league opener

PIKEVILLE — The undefeated Charles B. Aycock High varsity softball team needed just five innings to dispense with visiting Southern Wayne 10-0 in its 3-A/4-A Eastern Carolina Conference debut Friday evening.

The Lady Golden Falcons plated at least one run in all five at-bats and walked off with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Junior Taylor Puetz led the CBA offense at 3 for 3, while senior Mookie Powell batted 3 for 4. Senior Connor Vinson, junior Cassandra Lassiter and junior Hannah Vinson each collected two hits. Lassiter drove in three runs.

In the circle, senior right-hander MacKenzie Wheeler blanked the Lady Saints on four singles. Wheeler issued three walks and struck out five.

CBA and Southern Wayne are 3-A members of the conference. The Lady Falcons, 6-0 overall, continue conference play at 4-A D.H. Conley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
