Canadian duo paces Barton in opening round

MONROE — The Barton College women’s golf team begins Tuesday’s final round of the Wingate Intercollegiate Challenge at Rolling Hills Country Club mired in last place in the nine-team field.

The Lady Bulldogs posted a 345 total for their four low individuals over the 5,922-yard, par-72 layout and trail eighth-place Lincoln Memorial University by 16 shots.

Clare McMahon, a freshman from Canada, paced Barton with a round of 82, which left her sharing 21st place in the 53-player field. Nikki Norlin, another Canadian freshman, came in with an 85 and is tied for 38th.

Barton also counted an 84 from sophomore Spaniard Maria Garcia and a 94 from sophomore Sydney Turner. Sophomore Kelsey Woodard shot 100.

Tusculum College claimed the team lead at the midway point at 317, followed by host Wingate University (321) and Young Harris College (323).
