With Nos. 1 and 2 Rory Gaydon and Oscar Marmestadt battling to three-set wins, host Barton claimed five of the six singles matches to claim a 7-2 men’s tennis victory Friday against North Greenville.
The victory sends the Bulldogs to a 5-12 overall record and 3-6 in NCAA Division Conference Carolinas, a game ahead of Southern Wesleyan for the seventh spot in the league standings. The Warriors will visit Barton in the Bulldogs’ conference finale Saturday morning at 11. North Greenville, currently in fifth place at 6-3, departed 8-9 overall.
Gaydon, a sophomore from England, dropped his first set to NGU’s Dion Nijboer 6-3 before pulling out twin 6-4 outcomes in the last two sets on the first court. Marmestadt went up 6-1 on Alejandro de la Torre before dropping the next set 6-2. The freshman from Sweden then claimed the third set 6-4.
Also picking up singles wins for the Bulldogs were No. 3 Diego Agudelo, No. 5 Alessandro Gerbino and No. 6 Ermanno Galimberti.
Agudelo-Marmestadt prevailed at No. 1 doubles and Gaydon-Jesus Gill pulled out an 8-7 victory at No. 2 to give Barton a 2-1 lead entering singles.
