Sophomore Iuri Aleixo’s first goal of the season in the 66th minute enabled the Barton men’s soccer team to salvage a 2-2 NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas draw with visiting Erskine on Saturday.
Still, the standoff denied the Bulldogs their first 2017 conference win.
Barton emerged 0-5-1 in the league and 2-8-1 overall. The Flying Fleet improved to 2-3-1 in the conference and to 4-7-1 against all foes.
The Fleet led 1-0 at halftime and 2-1 in the second half.
Goalkeepers Jens Madsen Hordvik of Barton and Mikael Varin of Erskine then repelled respective threats the final 24 minutes of regulation and the pair of 10-minute overtimes.
Hordvik, a senior, notched eight saves, while Varin was credited with seven.
Erskine’s Grant Dickey opened the scoring in the 43rd minute on an assist from Louis Gueye.
The Bulldogs answered with less than four minutes elapsed in the second half. Junior Tolly Beatson knocked in his second 2017 goal on a double assist from Cooper Dean, a freshman from Hunt High, and freshman Pol Monells.
The Fleet registered its second lead in the 59th minute. Dean claimed the assist on Aleixo’s tying goal, serving the ball from his half of the pitch into the box at Erskine’s end.
The Bulldogs continue conference play on the road Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Chowan in Murfreesboro.
