Bulldogs launch CC play with victories

The Barton College men’s volleyball team welcomed the opportunity to not only be at home but compete against NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas opposition.

The defending confernce champions, the Bulldogs blanked Emmanuel College 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 on Saturday after serving into conference play with a 25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-18 conquest of Erskine (South Carolina) College on Friday.

Barton opened its season with losses to Div. I teams in four of five matches.

The Bulldogs hit .449 against Emmanuel. The Lions’ 17 attack errors influenced a .219 percentage. Brothers Angelos Mandilaris, a sophomore, and Vasilis Mandilaris, a junior, triggered Barton. Angelos Mandilaris guided the offense with 14 kills and was responsible for 14.5 points. Vasilis Mandilaris notched 10 kills and five digs.

Junior Aleksa Brkovic added seven kills. Redshirt junior Oscar Florentino recorded 31 assists and freshman Wilfredo Rivera led with six digs.

Against Erskine, the Bulldogs benefited from 13 kills from Brkovic, who hit .647, and 12 kills from Angelos Mandilaris. Brkovic added five assists, two aces and seven digs. Angelos Mandilaris contributed two aces and three digs.

Vasilis Mandilaris had four kills, while Florentino’s numbers included 31 assists, three kills and six digs.

The Bulldogs continue conference play at North Greenville (South Carolina) University on Friday and visit Limestone (South Carolina) College on Saturday.
