Morkos Youssef, co-owner of Brewmasters, had always wanted to showcase comedians at his restaurants in Wilson and Goldsboro, but neither he nor his wife, Molly, had experience in booking acts like that.
While meeting with Matt Dameron of Rocky Mount, who had been doing media work for Brewmasters, Dameron asked the Youssefs if they were interested in booking any comedians. Dameron is a comedian himself and books fellow comedians for regional shows.
“Morkos was so excited when Matt asked about booking comedians that he got up and walked out of the room,” Molly Youssef said laughing.
Brewmasters started its comedy night in April at the Wilson location, 2117 Forest Hills Road. Comedians are scheduled to perform on the last Wednesday of every month at 8:30 p.m. with shows usually consisting of three comedians, one considered a headliner.
“The shows have gone really well, and we’ve had good crowds with everyone laughing,” Molly Youssef said. “At the first one, we were really nervous. We all stood in the back, and when the crowd started laughing we thought, ‘This is really going to work.’”
The Aug. 28 show will feature headliner Benjamin Malone of Raleigh. Malone has performed at Goodnight’s comedy club in Raleigh and various comedy festivals. He recently made it to the semifinals of Goodnight’s “North Carolina’s Funniest” contest.
Malone emcees the comedy nights at Brewmasters and warms up the crowds with five to seven minutes of his own comedy material before introducing the evening’s featured comedians.
Molly Youssef warns that the acts featured are not child friendly.
“Almost every event we hold can be attended by people of all ages, but a lot of these acts are definitely not appropriate for children.”
