CONOVER — Behind freshman Bryson Boyette and junior Justin Plane, the Barton College men’s golf team leads the 17-team field in the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional Preview after posting a score of 2-over-par 290 for its low four individuals in Monday’s opening round at Rock Barn Resort and Spa.
The Bulldogs also occupy the top two individual spots. Boyette, the 2017 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A champion and a product of Fike High, carded six birdies in firing his collegiate low round of 4-under-par 68 over the 6,635-yard, par-72 layout that will be the site for the Div. II South/Southeast Super Regional next May.
Plane, who hails from Whitby, Canada, stands second after posting his third 70 of the fall season. Barton also counted a 74 from junior Logan Zimarino and a 78 from senior Travis Broome. Junior Scott Pechacek turned in an 89.
Barton enters Tuesday’s final round five shots ahead of second-place Lincoln Memorial, which was ranked No. 21 nationally in the Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Coaches poll. Following Lincoln Memorial’s 295 is Coker (South Carolina) College at 296.
Individually, a trio of players are tied for third place, three shots behind Boyette and one behind Plane.
