Freshman Bryson Boyette and senior Turner Garris of the Barton College men’s golf team have been named the recipients of the 2018 Grover W. Bullin Golf Scholarship award.
Boyette and Garris, both Fike High products, were recognized following the recent Grover Bullin Memorial golf tournament at Wilson Country Club. The tournament is a main source for funding the scholarships.
Boyette, the 2017 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-A individual champion as a Fike senior, dazzled his freshman season with the Bulldogs. while Garris, a former 3-A Big East Conference Player of the Year, enjoyed a stellar junior season.
Boyette was proclaimed the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year and earned second-team all-conference acclaim. He seized the individual championship in the Barton Intercollegiate Invitational.
In 11 events, Boyette posted a stroke average of 74.07 and a low round of 68.
He played 28 rounds and, in his 11 events, finished in the top five twice and in the top 10 on two occasions.
In his junior season, Garris competed in 27 rounds in 11 events. His stroke average of 76.41 was fourth best for the Bulldogs. He fired a low round of 69 and finished in the top five and top 10 of a tournament once. Garris represented the Bulldogs in one event as a senior, managing a 159 total for two rounds.
To be eligible for the scholarship, a golfer must reside in Wilson County and be a member of either the Barton men’s or women’s team.
