Behind the pitching of junior right-hander Austin Slate and senior Alston Pittman’s two-run home run in the first inning, the host Beddingfield High varsity baseball team posted a 7-1 nonconference win against 1-A South Creek of Robersonville on Wednesday evening.
The second win against Cougars (0-2) lifted the Bruins of the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference to a 2-1 mark going into Thursday’s home game against Goldsboro at 5 p.m.
Slate, in his first start and second 2018 appearance, limited South Creek to five hits and an unearned run through six innings. Slate walked three and struck out five. Mann Farmer, a junior right-hander, pitched a scoreless seventh, allowing only a walk.
Pittman connected for his home run over the right-field fence with a teammate on base in the bottom of the first.
The Bruins added a run in the second and four in the fifth — when senior Dustin Peele’s bunt single was the only hit. South Creek helped Beddingfield’s cause with errors and a couple of passed balls.
Freshman Tyler Godwin, Farmer and sophomore Rio Montes each singled for the other Beddingfield hits.
Hunter Canon batted 2 for 2 for the Cougars.
