The showdown of the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas’ top two women’s volleyball teams did not go host Barton College’s way Friday night in kicking off the homecoming weekend.
The second-place Lady Bulldogs were dealt a 25-20, 25-13, 25-16 setback by front-running Emmanuel (Georgia) College.
Barton fell to 6-2 in the conference and 10-13 overall, while the Lions improved to 10-1 and 16-8, respectively. Emmanuel became the first conference team to record double-digit wins in league play this season.
Pacing Barton were sophomore Kaytlin Elkins with seven kills and eight digss; senior Allie Cullens with five kills and two solo blocks; sophomore Camryn Frederick with five kills, redshirt-senior Riley Bane with a team-high 15 digs and senior Angelica Acevedo with a team-high 12 assists.
Emmanuel won the first set despite hitting for an .093 percentage and secured momentum by hitting .417 in the second set.
Barton continues the homecoming weekend with a match at noon Saturday against conference rival Erskine (South Carolina) College.
