Barton tennis teams fall in Underwood’s debut

FLORENCE, S.C. — Both Barton College tennis teams experienced defeat in the debut of head coach Lee Underwood in City of Florence College Tennis Invitational.

The men’s team dropped a 5-0 decision to Newberry (South Carolina) College and the Lady Bulldogs were defeated 5-1 by Lander University.

Barton’s men return to action at 10 a.m. Saturday with a nonconference test against archrival University of Mount Olive, and the women play at noon Saturday against Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Providing Barton’s lone point was the No. 1 doubles tandem of junior Daria Avram-sophomore Marissa Stevenson by an 8-0 margin.

The Lady Bulldogs trailed 2-1 after doubles and Lander, also in its season opener, swept the bottom half of Barton’s singles lineup. Singles matches involving Avram, Stevenson and Vanessa Sanoja were not finished under the tournament format once the victory was clinched.

Losing in doubles for the Barton men were Jesus Gil-Diego Aguledo at No. 1 by an 8-4 margin; Rory Gaydon-Martijn Eleveld at No. 2 by an 8-3 count; and Oscar Marmestedt-Allessandro Gerbino at No. 3 by an 8-2 score.Gil and Eveld suffered 6-3, 6-1 singles losses, allowing the Wolves to clinch the outcome.  Not finished were matches featuring Gaydon at No. 1, Aguledo at No. 3, Marmestedt at No. 4 and Gerbino at No. 6.
